Y-12's Commitment
Y-12 is committed to small business success. A management and operating contractor employing more than 4,500 personnel reporting to multiple operations, Y-12, through its senior management leadership, enables its employees to participate in the success of women-owned small businesses.
Y-12's President and General Manager endorses a small business policy directing staff to provide contracting opportunities to small businesses. This policy is executed through the SPO, which works closely with technical and procurement staff to develop aggressive small business goals, strategies, and subcontracting plans and to reserve acquisitions for small businesses.
Y-12's vice president of Business Services, who implements the above policy and procedures, oversees several divisions at Y-12, including Procurement Operations.
The Procurement Operations director implements the small business policy and procedures and manages the Socioeconomic Programs Office. The current manager, a proven advocate for active in-reach and outreach initiatives, implements a strong Mentor-Protégé Program and develops a small business strategic plan initiative that seeks innovative approaches to maintaining and improving Y-12's small business participation.
The SPO focuses on efforts such as these:
- Y-12's President and General Manager and Vice President often speak at small business venues.
- A Y-12 executive makes a presentation at the Tennessee Minority Supplier Development Council's local conference.
- The Procurement director conducts a partnership meeting with the NNSA contracting officer and small business program manager to review performance and emphasize the company's commitment to subcontracting with small businesses.
- The Procurement staff is advised on small business requirements through correspondence, staff meetings, and internal training programs.
- Y-12 conducts self-assessments to identify deficiencies and areas for improvement and to define corrective actions in its efforts to engage small businesses.
