The SPO holds meetings and conducts numerous presentations each year for Y‑12's operations, divisions, and management team to provide training and guidance for buyers concerning socioeconomic program policy, procedures, goals, and federal regulations that govern the program.

Specific in-reach activities have included the following:

  • Presented "Working with Small Businesses" to the Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility and Uranium Processing Facility staffs
  • Educated the Y-12 community and employees on small business activities by including news articles in the monthly company newsletter and local newspapers and on the intranet
  • Conducted a Mentor-Protégé Forum and HBCU Day
  • Conducted a Mentor-Protégé Orientation training for new participants
  • Provided mentor-protégé business focus training that included accounting, business development, and proposal writing

The capabilities and accomplishments of small businesses are often highlighted in Y‑12's newsletter, The Y-12 Times, which is sent primarily to Y‑12 employees and their families. Through these articles, employees learn of past successes and can contemplate ways these small businesses can work with Y-12 in the future.
