Materials Camp

Materials Camp,
June 16–20, 2008
Spend a week with the world’s best
Materials Camp is a week-long opportunity for high school students to learn about materials science through hands-on experiments at UT-Knoxville, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and Commerce Park — some of the world’s leading institutions in materials research. You will work with the actual equipment, testing materials and finding out why they behave the way they do. Some of the top scientists in their fields — including professors from the UT Department of Materials Science and Engineering, research staff from ORNL and Y‑12, and engineers from local companies — will lead the experiments.
What will you do at Materials Camp?
- Have fun — our number one goal is to make applied science an exciting, fun experience for you.
- Tour research laboratories at ORNL and UTK.
- Solve a “failure analysis” problem by evaluating debris from space shuttle Columbia.
- Learn to use state-of-the-art research equipment, including a thermal imaging camera and scanning electron microscope.
- Present your findings to a group of industry experts, camp peers, and parents.
Find out what people thought of their experiences at previous camps.
- Take two for summer Materials Camp
- Campers return to school as award winners
- Time for Leadership
