Part of the National Nuclear Security Administration's Y‑12 National Security Complex, the Oak Ridge Metrology Center serves as a unique resource to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and provides calibration services that are traceable to NIST standards in 25 measurement disciplines.
Traceability is the ability to relate individual measurement results to national, international or nationally accepted measurement systems through an unbroken chain of comparison.
The Oak Ridge Metrology Center also is accredited under the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program in eight of those measurement disciplines.
For three of the 25 measurement disciplines, the Metrology Center is the only laboratory in the United States that can provide direct NIST traceability or an uninterrupted link from a national standard to a private company. Oak Ridge's partnership with NIST provides this link.
