Health care spending accounts allow some over-the-counter OTC drugs to be counted as eligible expenses.

Allowable OTC Product Categories

  • Acne medications and creams
  • Anti-gas
  • Anti-itch
  • Antidiarrheals
  • Asthma/wheezing/shortness of breath
  • Athlete's foot/antifungal
  • Allergy/sinus/nasal decongestant
  • Corn, callous removal
  • Cough/cold/fever reducer/loosen phlegm
  • Dandruff/seborrhea/psoriasis medications
  • Ear problems/ear drying/swimmer's ear
  • Ear wax
  • Eye problems
  • Female contraceptives & spermicidal products/condoms
  • Fever blister medication
  • First aid (antimicrobials, antibiotics, antiseptics, etc.)
  • Head lice treatments
  • Heartburn or indigestion
  • Hemorrhoid
  • Jock itch/antifungal
  • Laxative/stool softeners
  • Menstrual pain
  • Mouth pain
  • Muscle aches or joint pain

  • Dietary supplements (botanicals/herbals, combination products, minerals, vitamins, etc.)
  • Deodorant/antiperspirant products
  • Diaper rash medications
  • Diapers and wipes
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • First aid supplies not considered drugs (bandages gauze, rubbing alcohol, pregnancy test kits, etc.)
  • Mouthwashes/rinses
  • Shampoos, hair dyes
  • Skin bleaching
  • Soap
  • Sundries and toiletries
  • Sunscreens
  • Teeth whitening kits
  • Toothpaste/dental floss
