Special Training Materials

Realistic training is enhanced by the use of relevant quantities of nuclear and radiological materials. These materials force teams to exercise the full range of their equipment and to properly exercise tactics, techniques and procedures.

Members of the 54th WMD Civil Support Team (Wisconsin National Guard) operate a decontamination line while practicing proper personnel monitoring techniques.

The Y-12 site license allows the use of weapons-grade nuclear material, providing trainees the opportunity to recognize and detect materials of greatest concern. Available materials include:

  • Uranium in many forms (metal, oxides) and enrichments (highly enriched uranium, low enriched uranium, natural and depleted)
  • Cesium-137
  • Cobalt-60
  • Strontium-90
  • Others as needed
