Anna Beard receives NNSA Bronze Medal Award

Anna Beard, senior project manager with the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA’s) Y‑12 Site Office (YSO), has received the NNSA Bronze Medal Award of Excellence for her distinguished service in the national security of the United States.
The NNSA award was presented to Beard by Robert D. Herrera, NNSA Director of Infrastructure and Facilities Management, during a ground breaking ceremony held last week at Y‑12. The event was held to recognize the start of construction of a $63 million project to upgrade aging potable water systems at Y‑12. The citation was signed by Thomas D’Agostino, NNSA Administrator.
Ted Sherry, YSO Manager, said “All of us at YSO are very proud of Anna’s achievement. This reflects on her many notable contributions to the Department of Energy and in particular her dedication to excellence in project management at Y‑12.”
Beard has 21 years of engineering and project management experience with DOE. She joined DOE in 1987 and served at the Richland Operations Office, Richland, Washington, where she managed nuclear fuels manufacturing operations, reactor and chemical processing operations and constructed and managed liquid and solid waste management operations facilities.
Beard joined the YSO staff in 2001 and has managed over $200 million in general and line item construction projects, including the recently completed Compressed Air Upgrades Project. Beard is currently responsible for the Potable Water Systems Upgrades Project and the Steam Plant Life Extension Project, which are currently in design and construction phases.
Beard is a native of Brownsville, Tennessee. She received a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Tennessee State University in 1987. She is a certified Level III and PMI, Project Management Professional. Beard has received numerous awards for her work including two White House Closing the Circle Awards; the DOE Hanford Site “Woman of Achievement” Award; the Washington State Recycling Award for the Hanford Site Recycling Program; the Secretary of Energy National Award for Pollution Prevention in Public Awareness; and the Secretary of Energy Award for Community Service and Points of Light.
Anna and her husband, Sam Taylor, live in Knoxville, Tennessee. They have one daughter.
The mission of the NNSA’s YSO is to ensure the safe, secure and cost-effective operation of the Y‑12 National Security Complex. Y‑12 is a key facility in the U.S. Nuclear Weapons Complex and is responsible for ensuring the safety and reliability of the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile. YSO employees perform program oversight, contract and administrative management and technical evaluation and assessment to meet this mission.
