Halls Middle School students get a taste of science at Y-12

During a visit to the Y‑12 National Security Complex on May 20, eighth graders Miller Sullivan, center, and Tyler Young, right, learn what happens to a banana when it is submerged in liquid nitrogen. Darryl Smith, left, was one of four engineering, science and history experts to give nearly 50 Halls Middle School students a taste of science past and present at Y‑12.

Halls science teacher Andrea Souza worked with Y‑12 to set up the tour and said, “I want my kids to become scientists. I want them to walk away from Y‑12 and say ‘I want to work there someday.’” She may just get her wish. As the students rotated from the session about liquid nitrogen to a session called “Vacuum-Packed Fun,” one student told the next group, “Wow, that was cool!”
