Mon, 8 June 2009

B&W Y-12 recently was honored by the U.S. Small Business Administration with two prestigious small business awards during a local small business celebration event held at New Hope Center’s Zach Wamp Auditorium. Clint Smith, director of the SBA Nashville District, presented the awards.

The 2008 Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Manufacturing Category honors large federal contractors that exemplify small business utilization and was awarded to only four contractors across the nation. The SBA also honored B&W Y‑12 with the 2008 Francis Perkins Vanguard Award that honors government and industry executives for their excellence in the use of women-owned small businesses as prime contractors and subcontractors. The Frances Perkins Award is given to only one recipient in the nation.

Tom Vereb, the assistant manager for administration at the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Y‑12 Site Office, also congratulated the award winners, adding that “whether it’s the NNSA or a large prime contractor or a small business, it takes everybody working together to get the job done.”

In addition to receiving awards, B&W Y‑12 announced the winners of their annual small business awards to businesses that provided stellar performance in helping meet mission goals. Gloria Mencer, Socioeconomic Programs manager, made the presentation to six small businesses at the ceremony.

  • Strata G, Knoxville, Tenn., received the Small Business of the Year Award
  • K-Chemical, Bean Station, Tenn., received the Small, Disadvantaged Business Award
  • DIGIS, Boca Raton, Fla., received the woman-owned small business award
