Y-12 signs Mentor-Protégé agreements

BWXT Y-12 signs unprecedented number of Mentor-Protégé agreements

Tues, 20 Sep 2005

BWXT Y-12 signed seven Mentor-Protégé agreements in a ceremony Monday, an unprecedented number for any site in the National Nuclear Security Administration's Nuclear Weapons Complex.

The signings bring Y-12's total number of Mentor-Protégé agreements to 10. Arrangements are being made to sign an additional two more before the end of the year.

The Department of Energy Mentor Protégé Program is designed to encourage DOE prime contractors to assist small disadvantaged firms certified by the Small Business Administration (SBA) under Section 8(a) of the Small Business Act, which includes women-owned small businesses, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and other minority institutions of higher learning and small business concerns owned and controlled by service-disabled veterans.

The program provides BWXT Y-12 a mechanism for entering into integrated working agreements and for providing non-financial assistance to these entities. The agreements are designed to enhance the Protégé's business and technical capabilities, to foster long-term business relationships between these small businesses and DOE prime contractors, and to increase the overall number of small businesses receiving awards.

Today's signers include LeGacy Resource Corporation, G2 Engineering & Management, Inc., East Tennessee Mechanical Contracting, Inc., Haselwood Enterprises, Inc., Project Enhancement Corporation, Navarro Research and Engineering, Inc., and Alabama State University. BWXT Y-12 previously has entered into Mentor-Protégé agreements with MS Technology Inc., Tennessee State University and South Carolina State University as part of the DOE Mentor-Protégé Initiative.

BWXT Y-12, a limited liability enterprise of BWX Technologies Inc. and Bechtel National Inc., operates the Y-12 National Security Complex for the National Nuclear Security Administration.
