Klemm promoted to deputy general manager at B&W Y-12

William R. (Bill) Klemm has been promoted to deputy general manager of B&W Y‑12. In this position, he will be responsible for the day-to-day site operation of the Y‑12 National Security Complex.
“I’m humbled to be selected to serve in this capacity,” said Klemm. “I’d like to think we are on the cusp of major transformation at Y‑12. In the next two years, I think we’ll see a change in the way we do business and how we project our future. I’m proud to be a part of this process.”
Klemm has been a member of the B&W Y‑12 senior leadership team since 2006, serving as the deputy manager and vice president of Facilities, Infrastructure and Services (FI&S). As FI&S vice president, he was responsible for the maintenance of facilities, utilities, roads and grounds, and all services in support of the 300-building site.
Before joining Y-12, Klemm served in the U.S. Navy as the deputy commander of Logistics, Maintenance, and Industrial Operations, Naval Sea Systems Command. In that position, he managed operations and the performance of the nation’s four nuclear naval shipyards, overseeing all privately owned shipyards employed by the U.S. Department of Defense, and the building of ships for the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Army. He managed compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act and environmental regulations, as well as the work and budget performance of 35 major field activities.
He earned an MBA from Rennselaer Polytechnic University and a B.S. in industrial management from Widener University. He completed the Advanced Management Program at Duke University and the Navy Management at the Top program at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
Steve Little, senior director of FI&S, will be acting manager of FI&S until a permanent replacement for Klemm is appointed.
Y-12 is a key facility in the U.S. Nuclear Weapons Complex and is responsible for ensuring the safety, reliability and security of the nuclear weapons stockpile and serves as the nation’s primary repository of highly enriched uranium. B&W Technical Services Y‑12 operates the Y‑12 National Security Complex for the National Nuclear Security Administration.
