Y-12 engineers spread the word during National Engineers Week

Tues, 17 February 2009

Engineers from the Y-12 National Security Complex are celebrating National Engineers Week, February 16-20, by visiting area schools and discussing the many contributions of engineers and encouraging young people to learn more about math and science.

Visits are planned to high schools in Knox, Anderson and Greene counties. During last year’s event, Y‑12 engineers visited 13 schools and connected with about 1600 students.

“National Engineers Week is a good way for us to engage in the community,” said John Gertsen, vice president, Engineering.” The schools benefit from our presence there, and we benefit by reinforcing to young people the importance of math and science.”

The Engineers Week Coalition, which was founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1989, comprises more than 75 engineering, professional and technical societies and more than 50 corporations and government agencies. The coalition is dedicated to sustaining and growing a dynamic engineering profession by ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce, increasing interest in engineering and technology careers, and promoting precollege literacy in math and science.

Bechtel National Inc., one of B&W Y‑12’s parent companies, is a founding member of the Engineers Week Coalition through its Bechtel Foundation Group.

B&W Y-12, a limited liability enterprise of The Babcock and Wilcox Company and Bechtel National Inc., operates the Y‑12 National Security Complex for the National Nuclear Security Administration.
