The Y‑12 National Security Complex was created, and exists today, to carry out one principal mission — defend the nation.

Although new missions have emerged and the country hasn't built a new nuclear weapon since the early 1990s, Y‑12 remains committed to sustaining a safe, secure and effective nuclear deterrent.

The following stories highlight Y‑12's role in carrying out the nation's nuclear deterrence policy — from the original mission to enrich uranium to increased production during the Cold War to the site's current and future refurbishment and storage activities. As long as nuclear weapons exist, Y‑12 remains essential to the nation's security.
