Nuclear Navy

Since U.S. Navy Capt. Hyman Rickover first visited Oak Ridge, Tenn., in 1946 to study nuclear reactor technology, Y‑12 has worked frequently with the Navy. In 2002 Y‑12 began providing the highly enriched uranium needed to fuel the nation's nuclear fleet. All of the highly enriched uranium going into this fuel comes from dismantled nuclear weapons; in fact, some of the same nuclear weapons that these vessels once carried will end up powering them in the future.
