Banner year for Mentor‑Protégé Program

Y‑12's Mentor‑Protégé Program, a part of the Socioeconomic Programs Office, is a program to learn from and follow and has been pointed to as an example for DOE by Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman. By working with the protégés, Y‑12 helps them enhance their business and technical capabilities, which in turn supports local and national economies.

The DOE Mentor‑Protégé Program is designed to encourage prime contractors to assist small, disadvantaged firms — women‑owned small businesses, Historically Black Colleges and Universities and small businesses owned by service‑disabled veterans.

In September, BWXT Y‑12 signed seven mentor‑protégé agreements, which is an unprecedented number of agreements for any NNSA site. The new protégés include LeGacy Consulting Corporation, G2 Engineering and Management Inc., East Tennessee Mechanical Contracting Inc., Haselwood Enterprises Inc., Project Enhancement Corporation, Navarro Research and Engineering Inc. and Alabama State University.

“The mentor‑protégé agreements have helped Y‑12 develop relationships with small businesses and universities that create win‑win situations for both parties. The agreements established to date have put Y‑12 at the forefront of establishing such relationships across the DOE and NNSA complex. We, Y‑12, are sought after and recognized for creating and fostering these relationships,” said Edwena Crowe, manager of Information and Materials Division.

Gloria Mencer, manager of the Socioeconomic Programs Office, said, “The Mentor‑Protégé Program helps small businesses grow. When we work with small businesses, we are helping these businesses while also meeting the Y‑12 mission.”

FY 2005 was a record year for Y‑12's program, which was recognized by DOE with the Secretarial Mentor‑Protégé Teaming Award and NNSA's Small Business Achievement Award, Management and Operating Contractor.

Other protgs working with Y‑12 include American Defense Services Inc., ES&H Inc., MS Technology Inc., Tennessee State University and South Carolina State University.
