As the largest employer in Oak Ridge, Y‑12 plays an important role in the economic vitality of the area. One way Y‑12 aids the economy is by working with small businesses. “We work with small businesses throughout the U.S.—not just Tennessee,” Gloria Mencer said.
More than $149 million was spent in Tennessee in FY 2005 through work with small businesses.
Y‑12 puts money into the local and national economies by buying goods and services from small businesses that are chosen to meet the Y‑12 mission. The economic cycle is never ending as each part involved funds another part.
Edwena Crowe said, “While Y‑12 is a major contributor to our region's economic growth, it is important to help small businesses contribute to this growth.” Large companies like Y‑12 have a trickle‑down effect on the economy, especially when working with small businesses. Y‑12's Socioeconomic Programs Office participates in small business matchmaking events like the DOE Small Business Conference that will be held in June 2006.
Y‑12 was recognized for its small business achievements at the 6th Annual DOE Small Business Conference in June 2005. This recognition was not the first Y‑12 has received for its work. The U.S. Small Business Administration presented the Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Excellence to BWXT Y‑12 in 2004 to recognize its use of small business subcontractors.
