DSW's slice of the pie
Directed Stockpile Work funds many Y12 activities. The DSW portion of Y‑12's $489 million FY 2006 Defense Programs budget amounts to 35% of the total, or about $172 million. This funding supports approximately 1,000 Y‑12 workers who are directly involved in the production of weapon components, which is the core element in the Y‑12 national security mission.
Other facets of the Y‑12 mission for which DSW is responsible include dismantlement and disposition of retired weapons, design and certification of transportation containers for weapon components and manufacture of components used across NWC for testing and evaluation.
DSW also manages the Y‑12 Stockpile Surveillance program. Surveillance involves destructive and nondestructive testing and analysis of complete weapons as well as specific components. The tests are used to evaluate the condition of the stockpile, encompassing new and/or life extension program production units, weapons returned from the stockpile, accelerated aging tests and materials compatibility and surveillance tests.
