The National Nuclear Security Administration recently recognized seven employees of B&W Y‑12 and the Y‑12 Site Office for their contributions to management of the nation’s nuclear materials.

On October 26, B&W Y‑12 was recognized as a Gold-level award recipient of the American Heart Association’s Fit-Friendly Companies program. B&W Y‑12 joins the ranks of nine companies in East Tennessee to achieve the Gold award from the nation’s premier association for promoting heart health, education and research.

Two Y‑12 employees have been recognized for their contributions to the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Defense Programs (DP). The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) today announced that the Y‑12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tenn., successfully met and exceeded Defense Program goals during Fiscal Year 2011 (FY 2011).

The Y‑12 National Security Complex has completed the removal and disposal of more than 2,100 containers of mixed waste, a major legacy waste disposal milestone for the Oak Ridge, Tennessee facility.

Infrared Debonding technology developed at the Y‑12 National Security Complex has been patented and is available for commercial licensing. The technique uses heat from localized infrared rays to degrade adhesive bonds, allowing the nondestructive separation of components and eliminating most mechanical processing.

Y‑12 National Security Complex employees recycled more than 6,100 pounds of their personal electronics during Pollution Prevention Week at an on-site event. The materials were collected by e-Cycle, a local company that recycles or finds new homes (reuses) electronics.

The Y‑12 National Security Complex and University of Tennessee signed an agreement Wednesday that allows the formal exchange of personnel, helping both organizations to accomplish long-term technology, business and research goals.

B&W Y‑12 LLC has named retired Vice Admiral Carl V. (Van) Mauney as Vice President of Program Management at the Y‑12 National Security Complex. A career submarine officer with 35 years of military service, Mauney most recently served as the Deputy Commander of U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM) at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb.

B&W Y‑12 LLC has named Bill Reis vice president of Environment, Safety and Health at the Y‑12 National Security Complex. Reis has managed manufacturing, engineering and quality assurance organizations during his 29-year career at the site, most recently serving as Vice President of Program Management.
