Think Uranium. Think Y-12

Uranium fever: Much like the California gold rush of 1849, the uranium flurry of 1949 led Geiger counter–toting prospectors to scour canyon walls and rock formations all over the Western U.S. in search of the black, metallic ore.

There are no shortcuts to becoming an expert. It takes deep commitment and a willingness to explore the unknown. Y‑12’s mastery of all things uranium has evolved over seven decades. The site’s machinists, chemical operators, technicians, engineers and scientists work with enriched uranium in its multiple forms — metals, chemical compounds and solutions — every day. So whenever the nation needs to better understand it, process it, protect it or detect it, there’s only one place to turn: the Y‑12 National Security Complex.
