The greening of Y-12

With more than 1,230 pollution prevention initiatives reducing some 2.07 billion pounds of waste since 1993, Y‑12 sustainability programs yielded $70.7 million in cost efficiencies to the Y‑12 Complex, and consequently, to taxpayers. Here are a few other Y‑12 green facts:

  • In FY 2012, Y‑12 recycled more than 3 million pounds of materials off-site including routine paper, cardboard, wooden pallets, scrap metal, lamps, etc.
  • So far in FY 2013, Y‑12 has recycled more than 1.7 million pounds of materials off-site.
  • New Hope Center and Jack Case Center are Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified.
  • Since the aluminum beverage can recycling program began in 1994, more than $82,400 has been donated to various charities nominated by employees.
  • From Fiscal Year 2008 to 2012, the Y‑12 PrYde Program revealed a 35 percent reduction of unsatisfactory and needs improvement facilities.
  • To date, the Unneeded Materials and Chemicals project has dispositioned more than 9.62 million pounds of materials (more than 11,600 items) and down-posted more than 97,000 square feet of radiological areas.
  • Since 2008, Clean Sweep activities have resulted in the disposition of more than 2,000 tons of materials.
