Reminder: Y-12 Public Warning Siren System being replaced, tested

Posted: September 25, 2012 - 12:55pm

The Y‑12 Public Warning Siren System (PWSS) located around the Oak Ridge area is being replaced this month with a test of the new system on Sept. 26.

The vendor, American Signal, will be testing the sirens Sept. 26 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. They may sound sirens multiple times during this window, and they probably will sound each siren individually to verify operation. If needed, they may sound each siren more than once. They will then sound half the sirens and record results, wait 10–15 minutes and sound the other half of the sirens.

One additional item: The new sirens could be louder than the old ones.

Remember, the siren sounding is only part of a test of the siren system.

The siren tests to be held Sept. 26 ensure that the public, Y‑12 employees and the environment would be protected in the event of an actual emergency at the Y‑12 National Security Complex.
