CNS sponsorship spurs strong turnout for Secret City Half Marathon & 5K

More than 50 runners from Y‑12 took part in the CNS-sponsored Secret City Half Marathon & 5K on Nov. 21. The team produced several age group award winners in both races, and the 2nd place winner overall in the half marathon, Travis Wilson. Nine of the Y‑12 team's runners reported achieving their best times, according to LiveWise athletic trainer and running coordinator Robert Eichin. Two on the Y‑12 team ran their first half marathon, Chris Gilliam and Jeff Bruner.

The Secret City Half Marathon & 5K also served as a training event preparing runners for the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon in April. CNS will sponsor that event as well, along with the Amarillo Marathon also in April 2016.

Both the April marathons offer half marathon, full marathon, and relay team categories. The Knoxville event also offers a 5K and Kids Run. CNS employees will be eligible for discounts at both events.
Event volunteers are also needed. LiveWise is providing training plans, nutrition advice and injury prevention tools at both sites. For information about these services, contact, at Pantex, Dee Weaver, 806.477.6189; at Y‑12, Robert Eichin, 865.576.0376.

Secret City Half Marathon & 5K notable finishes by CNS employees include:

Half Marathon
Travis Wilson, 2nd place, overall
Craig Schwartz, 1st place, men 50-54
Sam Lariviere, 2nd place, men 50-54

Jeff Bock, 1st place, men 55-59
Jay Everett, 1st place, men 40-44.
Michelle Williams, 2nd place, women 35-39

Quotes from participants
Michelle Williams ran her first 5K: "I was completely shocked. I only did that well because Karen Lacey (Y‑12 health and wellness coordinator) ran with me and I was determined to keep up with her. I was so proud that I did it and I knew I did my best. When they posted the unofficial results and I saw my name, I was completely floored."

Travis Wilson met other Y‑12 runners: "We definitely had perfect weather for the race, and I liked how the race started and finished along the water. Although my time wasn't quite as fast as I wanted, it was good to meet some Y‑12 runners and know that I'm not the only crazy one up early racing on a Saturday morning."

Jay Everett enjoyed the feeling of comradery with fellow team members: "It was a great team-building experience, and I'm definitely looking forward to participating in some more of these type of LiveWise-supported events."

Chris Gilliam appreciated CNS sponsorship: "I feel like we had a really good turnout of runners from Y‑12. (The sponsorship) definitely gives employees an incentive to participate in these events and get in good physical shape during preparation for the race."

Bill Willburn completed his third 5K: "It was good to be out by the river early in that bright, crisp morning, the runners and walkers were all enthusiastic. And while I certainly don't set any time records, being part of the LiveWise program has helped me be much more aware of doing the things that contribute to being healthier and happier."

Justin Montgomery had a great time: "It was cold to start but ended up being perfect by race time. A great time with great friends."
