Y-12 promotes STEM during Nuclear Science Week
Oak Ridge, Tenn. – Building partnerships between educators and Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS) continues during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The company is partnering with the American Museum of Science & Energy (AMSE) to celebrate Nuclear Science Week for second-grade teachers and students at Oak Ridge schools.
CNS is offering a one-hour virtual science class, Forces and Motion, complete with individual hands-on materials and a virtual AMSE educator to second-grade students at Glenwood, Linden, Willow Brook and Woodland elementary schools. The class will introduce nuclear science concepts to all second graders. CNS is also providing $1,000 STEM grants to middle- and high-school science departments to go toward the purchase of interactive technology programs or lab demonstration materials to increase engagement of students during this unusual year of instruction.
“Our goal is to create positive science experiences for Oak Ridge students,” said Kristin Waldschlager, Y-12 education outreach specialist and a former educator. “If we can get them excited about science early, then maybe some of them will decide to make a career out of science and that will help Y-12 in the future. This is a reminder to our community of the role science-based skills play in delivering Y-12’s mission”
Established by the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History, Nuclear Science Week is a nationally recognized annual celebration promoting all aspects of nuclear science. Held October 19–23 this year, the week includes events throughout the country.
