Environment, Safety and Health
In performing Y-12’s mission and in modernizing the Y-12 Complex, we are fully committed to ensuring the safety and health of our workers, the public, and the environment. Our commitment is described in our ES&H Policy Statement, which explains how Y-12’s policy is integrated into our business processes and systems, day-to-day operations, modernization initiatives, and planning activities.
Activities performed by Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC and its subcontractors are subject to 10 CFR Part 851, Worker Safety and Health Program. We have requested a variance for our subcontractors with regard to certain requirements for occupational medicine. Employees, including subcontractor employees, have the right to petition the Department of Energy Assistant Secretary for Environment, Safety, and Health for a conference on the application for a variance.
To further our commitment to environmentally responsible operations, we have integrated the requirements of an Environmental Management System into our Integrated Safety Management system and have chosen the international standard ISO 14001 as our EMS model. For more information, see Environmental Stewardship.
We are also committed to the U.S. Department of Energy policy of furthering transparency and openness in its implementation of the National Environmental Policy Act. Accordingly, on our NEPA Exclusions page you’ll find documentation of categorial exclusions determinations for Y‑12 projects involving classes of actions listed in DOE’s NEPA regulations.
