The Y-12 National Security Complex received startup authorization on July 2, 2026, for the site’s Calciner Project.  The National Nuclear Security Administration and Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC achieved this milestone that helps enable ongoing work to transform and recapitalize the site to support its nuclear deterrent mission.

NNSA announced today that it had completed “diamond stamping” of all canned subassemblies (CSA) for the B61-13 nuclear gravity bomb planned for the current Fiscal Year three months ahead of schedule at the Y-12 National Security Complex.

The Y-12 National Security Complex recently completed a highly successful 2026 lithium metal production campaign, nearly doubling its Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 goal and marking the most successful campaign in decades. This accomplishment also significantly increased Y-12’s stockpile of enriched lithium, helping to ensure the future of the nation’s nuclear deterrent. The lithium metal produced at Y-12 is unlike lithium used for batteries because it is enriched for use as part of the nation’s nuclear weapons deterrent. Brandon Williams, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Administrator and Department of Energy Under Secretary for Nuclear Security, said, “This achievement is a major win for America’s nuclear deterrent and a clear sign that Y-12 is delivering when the mission demands it most. By far exceeding its lithium processing goal, Y-12 demonstrated the kind of disciplined production performance the nation’s deterrent requires.”

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) recently completed a major project that modernized security at the Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12) while reducing the area within the site’s high-security zone. The effort, known as the West End Protected Area Reduction (WEPAR) Project, formally achieved full beneficial occupancy Feb. 24, a milestone that marks the end of major construction and sets the stage for future cleanup work and new land use in support of Y‑12’s nuclear security missions.

Jellico Elementary School won first place in the ninth annual “Dream it. Do it.” competition, which is sponsored by the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce and Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS). “Dream It. Do It.” pairs eighth grade students with local industries. The students produce videos describing the businesses, then the videos are judged to determine the winners of the competition. The goal of the program is to introduce students to careers in manufacturing and help develop the future workforce.

Emergency response personnel from the National Nuclear Security Administration and the Y‑12 National Security Complex’s managing and operating contractor, Consolidated Nuclear Security, along with other federal, state and local emergency management personnel, will conduct an emergency exercise on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, in and around the Y‑12 plant.

Today, the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) released its Enterprise Blueprint, a 25-year plan to align the delivery of specialized infrastructure with demands across the nuclear stockpile, global security, and naval nuclear propulsion missions. Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS) recently signed a memorandum of understanding with DigiLens to collaborate on advanced augmented, mixed, virtual, and extended reality (AR/MR/VR/XR) technologies in waveguides and heads-up displays. Annual competition promotes manufacturing careers for students

Do it. competition at Junior Achievement of East Tennessee.

Y-12 employees have designated $1.22 million for organizations since fund’s inception

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Twenty-four East Tennessee nonprofits received a total of $180,000 from the Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS) Community Investment Fund at a ceremony November 6.

Personnel will be performing preventive maintenance on the public warning siren system in the Oak Ridge area throughout the week of Nov. 6, 2023.

During that week, people in the area may occasionally hear audio from individual sirens in the vicinity of Y-12 National Security Complex.

The sirens are strategically placed to notify the public in the unlikely event of an on-site emergency that has impacts beyond the site boundary.

The W80-4 LEP achieved Phase 6.4 entry following successful execution of the Preliminary Design Review and Acceptance Group Review and the System Baseline Design Review, and passing through the System Pre-Production Engineering Gate.

Oak Ridge, Tenn.—Employees at Y‑12 National Security Complex are passing through new entrance booths to access the site’s high‑security area, the first step in the long‑planned Security Infrastructure Revitalization Program.

Crews replaced the previous security booths with new enterprise‑standard booths, or ESBs. The challenge was to complete that work without delaying employees’ arrival at their work locations.

Second multi-year HEU repatriation campaign fulfills countries' previous commitment and demonstrates their dedication to nuclear nonproliferation

WASHINGTON – Fulfilling a commitment made at the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit, the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) announced the removal of all highly enriched uranium (HEU) from the Kyoto University Critical Assembly (KUCA).

Oak Ridge, Tenn.— Y-12 flipped the switch on a new era as crews finalized the process of moving the entire site’s electrical supply to the new Pine Ridge substation.

In June, the Building 9204-02 (Beta 2) and Building 9201-01 (Alpha 1) electrical feeds were disconnected from the Elza-1 substation, marking the final load transition to Pine Ridge.

A Sustainability and Stewardship team removed legacy equipment from a Y-12 production building and decontaminated more than 38,000 square feet of space and, which removed legacy hazards from the site and made the space available for new processes and equipment.

WASHINGTON - The National Nuclear Security Administration this week held the groundbreaking of the multiyear Security Infrastructure Revitalization Program at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Tennessee. The project will replace a portion of the existing perimeter intrusion detection and assessment system, known as PIDAS, and upgrade other security features.

Warhead modernization activities ensure the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile continues to meet military requirements while enhancing safety and security

The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) announced today it has selected Nuclear Production One, LLC (NPOne) for the Management and Operating (M&O) contract for the Y-12 National Security Complex and Pantex Plant, located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Amarillo, Texas, respectively.

NPOne is a limited liability company, which consists of Fluor Federal Services, Inc. and AECOM Energy & Construction (an Amentum company).

Officials broke ground Oct. 28 on the Oak Ridge Enhanced Technology and Training Center (ORETTC), a novel federal and state funded concept to provide first responder training and technology demonstrations.

Y-12 employee-recommended awards in 2021 focused on at-risk youth, food insecurity, mental health, and aid to frontline workers

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Consolidated Nuclear Security, in partnership with East Tennessee Foundation, recently awarded 17 grants totaling $100,000 to nonprofit organizations in 10 East Tennessee counties—Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Hamblen, Knox, Monroe, Roane, Scott, and Sevier.

The National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Office of Safety, Infrastructure, and Operations took a significant step in advancing the Nation’s Enriched Uranium Strategy with its completion of the Nuclear Facilities Electrical Modernization (NFEM) portfolio. NFEM illustrates the type of foundational recapitalization work that is required for our aging infrastructure to continue meeting the Nuclear Security Enterprise’s vital national security missions.

The public will soon be able to get a sneak peek inside Y‑12 National Security Complex’s Building 9731 - a historic Manhattan Project-era building - without ever stepping foot on‑site. A virtual tour of select areas of the building is being developed in cooperation with the NNSA Production Office (NPO), the Department of Energy (DOE) Oak Ridge Consolidated Service Center, and the National Park Service.

Navigating the labor market can be a challenge, but it’s one NNSA's Office of Management & Budget is prepared to meet. With more than a third of the nuclear security enterprise’s workforce eligible for retirement within the next five years, attracting and recruiting top talent is a high priority for NNSA.

After four decades of federal service, NNSA Sandia Field Office (SFO) Manager Jeff Harrell retired July 31. During the week prior to his retirement, he celebrated his extensive career at a picnic held in his honor with the SFO employees who have been like an extended family.

Earlier this year, the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Office of Nuclear Material Integration (ONMI), in cooperation with the Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12), completed the Zero Power Physics Reactor (ZPPR) Depleted Uranium (DU) Recovery Project. The effort successfully recovered 28 metric tons of high-purity DU blocks previously used in the ZPPR; a research reactor located at the Idaho National Laboratory.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) will host a virtual job fair for the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) Wednesday, March 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (EDT). The NSE will hire over 3,000 new employees to join its robust and diverse workforce in 2021 to continue building the next generation of nuclear security professionals.
