OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Lieutenant Denver Fall of Y-12 National Security Complex’s Protective Force has been awarded the Colonel Sydnor Memorial Award by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

This prestigious award is presented annually to a member of the Composite Adversary Team, or CAT, who exemplifies the highest standards of physical fitness, tactical skill, character, and leadership. The award is named after Colonel Elliot P. “Bud” Sydnor, a dedicated U.S. Army and DOE veteran who played a significant role in elevating DOE’s Protective Force operations.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn — The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) recognized four teams at Y‑12 National Security Complex with Defense Programs Awards of Excellence, which were celebrated recently during an on‑site ceremony. OAK RIDGE, Tenn — Emergency response personnel from the National Nuclear Security Administration and the Y‑12 National Security Complex’s managing and operating contractor, Consolidated Nuclear Security, along with other federal, state and local emergency management personnel, will conduct an emergency exercise on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, in and around the Y‑12 plant.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn — Monthly testing of the public notification sirens in Oak Ridge has been rescheduled to Monday, June 2.

Warning sirens are placed around Oak Ridge’s three major sites — the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Y‑12 National Security Complex, and East Tennessee Technology Park. In the unlikely event of an off‑site emergency, sirens will sound to alert area residents.

The W80-4 LEP achieved Phase 6.4 entry following successful execution of the Preliminary Design Review and Acceptance Group Review and the System Baseline Design Review, and passing through the System Pre-Production Engineering Gate.

Oak Ridge, Tenn.—Employees at Y‑12 National Security Complex are passing through new entrance booths to access the site’s high‑security area, the first step in the long‑planned Security Infrastructure Revitalization Program.

Crews replaced the previous security booths with new enterprise‑standard booths, or ESBs. The challenge was to complete that work without delaying employees’ arrival at their work locations.

Second multi-year HEU repatriation campaign fulfills countries' previous commitment and demonstrates their dedication to nuclear nonproliferation

WASHINGTON – Fulfilling a commitment made at the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit, the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) announced the removal of all highly enriched uranium (HEU) from the Kyoto University Critical Assembly (KUCA).

Oak Ridge, Tenn.— Y-12 flipped the switch on a new era as crews finalized the process of moving the entire site’s electrical supply to the new Pine Ridge substation.

In June, the Building 9204-02 (Beta 2) and Building 9201-01 (Alpha 1) electrical feeds were disconnected from the Elza-1 substation, marking the final load transition to Pine Ridge.

A Sustainability and Stewardship team removed legacy equipment from a Y-12 production building and decontaminated more than 38,000 square feet of space and, which removed legacy hazards from the site and made the space available for new processes and equipment.

Inventions and patents recognized

Oak Ridge, Tenn.— Consolidated Nuclear Security recently celebrated innovations at Pantex and Y-12 during fiscal year 2021. Personnel behind nine inventions and five patents were recognized in a combined virtual ceremony.

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) completed its acquisition of the LeMond Carbon Facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, near the Y-12 National Security Complex on December 15. The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) announced today it has selected Nuclear Production One, LLC (NPOne) for the Management and Operating (M&O) contract for the Y-12 National Security Complex and Pantex Plant, located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Amarillo, Texas, respectively.

NPOne is a limited liability company, which consists of Fluor Federal Services, Inc. and AECOM Energy & Construction (an Amentum company).

Officials broke ground Oct. 28 on the Oak Ridge Enhanced Technology and Training Center (ORETTC), a novel federal and state funded concept to provide first responder training and technology demonstrations.

The National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Office of Safety, Infrastructure, and Operations took a significant step in advancing the Nation’s Enriched Uranium Strategy with its completion of the Nuclear Facilities Electrical Modernization (NFEM) portfolio. NFEM illustrates the type of foundational recapitalization work that is required for our aging infrastructure to continue meeting the Nuclear Security Enterprise’s vital national security missions.

The public will soon be able to get a sneak peek inside Y‑12 National Security Complex’s Building 9731 - a historic Manhattan Project-era building - without ever stepping foot on‑site. A virtual tour of select areas of the building is being developed in cooperation with the NNSA Production Office (NPO), the Department of Energy (DOE) Oak Ridge Consolidated Service Center, and the National Park Service.

Navigating the labor market can be a challenge, but it’s one NNSA's Office of Management & Budget is prepared to meet. With more than a third of the nuclear security enterprise’s workforce eligible for retirement within the next five years, attracting and recruiting top talent is a high priority for NNSA.

After four decades of federal service, NNSA Sandia Field Office (SFO) Manager Jeff Harrell retired July 31. During the week prior to his retirement, he celebrated his extensive career at a picnic held in his honor with the SFO employees who have been like an extended family.

Earlier this year, the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Office of Nuclear Material Integration (ONMI), in cooperation with the Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12), completed the Zero Power Physics Reactor (ZPPR) Depleted Uranium (DU) Recovery Project. The effort successfully recovered 28 metric tons of high-purity DU blocks previously used in the ZPPR; a research reactor located at the Idaho National Laboratory.

UPF’s Salvage and Accountability Building is the second major piece of the project to complete its structural steel

OAK RIDGE, Tennessee – The team building the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) at Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee placed the last piece of structural steel for the Salvage and Accountability Building (SAB), a major subproject, on Oct. 26 during a “topping out” ceremony and added a bonus piece of metal.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Uranium Processing Facility project at the Y-12 National Security Complex recently achieved major milestones that are propelling the project into its next phase of nuclear facility construction. About 400 skilled craft employees and professional services personnel will join the project in the next few months as part of the first wave in construction hiring.

The Anderson County Chamber of Commerce recently held its Annual Business Luncheon to recognize local companies and people for their business excellence and community spirit. On Tuesday, February 20, Anderson County Commission unanimously approved a resolution of appreciation honoring the Y-12 National Security Complex for its 75-year anniversary. Contributions from employees, retirees and the corporation were gathered during the sites’ recent campaigns.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Some 212 Pantex and Y-12 employees recently were recognized by the Office of Defense Programs for setting the bar high with their work and significant contributions to sustain our nation’s nuclear deterrent.

The Y-12 National Security Complex received the Secretary of Energy’s 2017 Federal Energy and Water Management Award for work completed by the NNSA Production Office, Consolidated Nuclear Security, and Johnson Controls, Inc. The award recognizes individuals and organizations that made significant contributions to energy and water efficiency within the federal government. The Y-12 team was the only group from the Department of Energy to receive a 2017 FEMP award.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — The Y-12 National Security Complex successfully has fabricated and delivered to the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) space-reactor core components for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) Kilopower Reactor Using Stirling Technology (KRUSTY) system. The system recently achieved criticality in a test at NNSS using the highly enriched uranium alloy components produced at Y-12.

The Consolidated Nuclear Security procurement team recently was recognized by the director of the Supply Chain Management Center (SCMC) at the Kansas City National Security Campus for a total strategic procurement savings of $13.5 million to NNSA in Fiscal Year 2017.

The SCMC is a National Nuclear Security Administration prime contractor that works with NNSA and Department of Energy contractors to leverage $4 billion spent annually by these sites for operating supplies, services, transportation and logistics, and information technology.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge Office (ORO) is initiating a series of controlled burns of grassland areas on the DOE Oak Ridge Reservation for prescribed burning on the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) Three Bend Area off Pump House and Bull Bluff Roads.

Beginning this week and continuing through mid-November 2017, weather permitting, controlled burns will take place:

OAK RIDGE, Tennessee—Emergency response personnel from the National Nuclear Security Administration and Consolidated Nuclear Security, along with federal, state and local emergency management personnel, will conduct an emergency management exercise September 20 in and around the Y 12 National Security Complex.

During this exercise, people in the vicinity of Y-12 may observe police and other emergency response vehicles, as well as responders simulating activities. These activities are part of the exercise.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – CNS CEO Morgan Smith has announced Lyle Cary as Vice President of Safeguards, Security and Emergency Services at the Pantex Plant and Y-12 National Security Complex.

Cary replaces Ken Freeman, who is retiring December 30, after a career spanning 40 years of security leadership, including a 30-year Air Force career that concluded as deputy director of Security Forces.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC achieved a significant increase in contracting with small businesses during fiscal year 2016, eclipsing its small business contracting goals and awarding more than $276 million at Pantex and Y-12.

The small business dollars awarded represented an increase of more than $36 million over FY 2015 figures, and were 67 percent of all funding awarded, exceeding CNS’ FY 2016 goal of awarding 55 percent of all procurement dollars.

Oak Ridge, Tenn.--More than 230 Pantex and Y-12 employees were recognized at National Nuclear Security Administration Defense Programs Awards of Excellence ceremonies recently held at the respective sites.

Two Pantex teams and six Y-12 teams were recognized by members of site management, as well as Roger Lewis, NNSA Associate Deputy Administrator for Stockpile Management, and Mike Thompson, NNSA Assistant Deputy Administrator for Major Modernization Programs, in Washington, D.C.

Oak Ridge, Tenn. – On Wednesday, Nov. 16, Y-12 Emergency Management personnel will perform maintenance of an emergency warning siren located on Quincy Avenue in Oak Ridge. During the maintenance, abbreviated soundings will be performed to ensure operability once repairs are completed. The Quincy Avenue warning siren is located approximately one block west of Lafayette Drive and north of State Highway 62.

Oak Ridge, Tenn. -- During the week of October 10, Y-12 Emergency Management personnel will perform maintenance and testing of warning sirens located in a two mile radius of the Y-12 National Security Complex.

The warning sirens are intended to alert the public in the unlikely event of an emergency involving a potential hazardous material release at Y-12.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – On September 13, Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC and the 16 local unions that comprise the Knoxville Building and Construction Trades Council reached terms on a new five-year labor agreement expiring September 30, 2021. The agreement also has an option for CNS to extend the new agreement without further negotiation for an additional five years through September 30, 2026.

Employees of the National Nuclear Security Administration Production Office have donated 50,177 pounds of food as part of the annual U.S. Department of Energy’s Feds Feed Families campaign. The amount of food donated is almost double the amount donated in the 2015 campaign and continues NPO’s tradition as a leader in this campaign among NNSA offices across the Enterprise.

AMARILLO, Texas – Representatives from Congress, the Department of Energy, and other distinguished national, state and local leaders joined leaders from Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC—the managing and operating contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Pantex Plant—for a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction for the new Administrative Support Complex (ASC).

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC purchased more than $210 million in goods and services from small businesses during the first nine months of fiscal year 2016, including more than $149 million at the Y-12 National Security Complex and $61 million at the Pantex Plant. Small business contracting at Y-12 includes more than $10 million in small business obligations for work on the Uranium Processing Facility project, which is managed by Bechtel National, Inc., through a subcontract with CNS.

OAK RIDGE, Tennessee—Emergency response personnel from the National Nuclear Security Administration and Consolidated Nuclear Security, along with federal, state and local emergency management personnel, will conduct an emergency management exercise June 8 in and around the Y-12 National Security Complex.

During this exercise, people in the vicinity of the Y-12 NSC may observe personnel simulating response activities and performing environmental monitoring or sampling, but these offsite activities are part of the exercise.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- Jeff Edlund, who conducts day-to-day federal oversight of enriched uranium facility operations at the Y-12 National Security Complex, has been named the U.S. Department of Energy “Facility Representative of the Year.”

The Y‑12 National Security Complex has completed disposition of 2,247 containers of mixed waste more than two years ahead of a September 2018 deadline.

The waste removal was mandated by the Oak Ridge Reservation Site Treatment Plan through a State of Tennessee Department of Environmental and Conservation Commissioner's order to the U.S. Department of Energy. The disposition of this material is part of a larger effort to dispose of legacy waste materials. Mixed waste is defined as material that consists of hazardous and radioactive waste.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Some 30 volunteers from Y-12 National Security Complex kicked off the 2016 CNS community service focus by volunteering to restore the Elkmont Campground Amphitheater in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Saturday, April 16.

This effort marks the 20th year that the Y-12 Help to the Smokies Volunteer Team has contributed time and financial support to maintain the park’s infrastructure. The current management and operations contractor, Consolidated Nuclear Security, has continued this legacy by providing financial support for the volunteer project.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Y-12 National Security Complex has completed significant infrastructure upgrades to the plant’s Analytical Chemistry facility to improve mission capability and reliability. The year-long effort was completed on schedule and budget.

Built in 1957, Building 9995 provides comprehensive analytical services in support of core missions, environmental compliance and overall worker health and safety at the Oak Ridge facility.

United Way contributions at the Y-12 National Security Complex and Pantex Plant totaled some $1.1 million, Consolidated Nuclear Security, the managing and operating contractor, announced today. Contributions from employees, retirees and the corporation were gathered during the sites' recent campaigns.

The campaigns also added more than 500 Leadership Givers, who have pledged to donate $1,000 or more. Corporate gifts of some $155,000 also added to the total.

Oak Ridge, Tenn. – Beginning March 10, DOE’s Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management is conducting a project that requires large, slow-moving equipment on Highway 58 and Highway 95. Motorists transiting the area during this time should be alert for slow-moving vehicles and expect occasional delays.

Dismantlement of W69 canned subassemblies has been completed at the Y-12 National Security Complex. The W69 was the warhead for the short-range attack missile and was retired from the U.S. nuclear stockpile in 1992. The last W69 weapon was dismantled in 1999. The Y‑12 site originally assembled the W69 CSA in the 1970s and began disassembly in 2012.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Effective today, Feb. 15, 2016, Michelle Reichert becomes the Deputy Enterprise Manager for Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC (CNS), reporting directly to CNS President and CEO Morgan Smith. CNS is the managing and operating contractor for two key national security facilities: the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas, and the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Effective Feb. 1, 2016, Morgan Smith will become the President and CEO of Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC. Smith succeeds Jim Haynes, who returns to an executive position at Bechtel after successfully leading CNS through its first phase as a consolidated organization. As President and CEO, Smith will be responsible for the management and operations of the Pantex Plant and the Y‑12 National Security Complex, key production facilities in the U.S. Nuclear Security Enterprise.

260 employees at the Pantex Plant and the Y-12 National Security Complex received National Nuclear Security Administration Defense Programs Awards of Excellence at an annual ceremony held recently at the respective sites. The recipients were recognized at the sites by members of site management as well as Steve Goodrum, NNSA Assistant Deputy Administrator for Stockpile Management at NNSA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
